The Moral Perfectionist: Enneagram Type 1 Overview

  • By Brett Schaffner
  • In Enneagram

Enneagram Type 1s, known as “The Moral Perfectionists,” are defined by their sense of right and wrong, and a deep desire for the world to be a better place. They are conscientious, ethical, and committed to improvement, both personally and globally. If you often find yourself driven by a sense of responsibility and a need for integrity, you might resonate with this type.

Core Motivations of an Enneagram Type 1

  • Core Fear: Being corrupt, evil, or defective
  • Core Desire: Goodness, integrity, and balance
  • Core Weakness: Anger or resentment, particularly when things do not go according to their strict internal standards
  • Core Longing: To hear and genuinely believe that they are good and righteous

Type 1s often carry a strong internal critic that holds them to high standards. This can manifest as a controlled and rational demeanor, which is simultaneously a strength and a source of internal tension.

Recognizing the Type 1 Personality

You might be a Type 1 if you find yourself frequently concerned with doing the right thing, improving systems and processes, and often feeling frustrated by imperfections. Type 1s are typically well-organized, meticulous, and deliberate in their actions, aiming to align their practices with their principles.

If familiar with the biblical creation story in Genesis, some argue that Type 1’s live life knowing the perfection of what Eden (the Garden) was like, constantly recognizing the imperfection of no longer being there and living in that dissonance.

Pro Tip #1 For Type 1s, mindfulness and relaxation techniques can be incredibly beneficial. They help mitigate the constant 'shoulds' and 'musts' dictated by their inner critic.

Common Myths About Type 1s

  • Myth 1: Type 1s are always rigid and serious. While they are disciplined, they also have a strong sense of humor and can be exceptionally warm and joyful.
  • Myth 2: They are judgmental. While Type 1s have high standards, their criticism is usually directed more internally than towards others. Any judgement you feel from a Type 1, know that their internal voice is telling them 10x worse.
  • Myth 3: Type 1s are only found in professions like law or academia. In reality, Type 1s thrive in various fields wherever integrity and ethics are valued.
