Enhancers, Not Limiters: Embracing Props in Stretching

  • By Brett Schaffner
  • In Stretching

As someone deeply involved in teaching and practicing stretching, I’ve learned to appreciate the profound impact that props can have on enhancing flexibility training. It’s easy to fall into the mindset that stretching without props is the “correct” or “superior” way. However, every time I challenge this notion and incorporate props into my routine, I discover their true value. Props aren’t just aids; they’re transformative tools that can help us achieve deeper stretches while adhering to the principles of Full Relaxation, Breathe to Relax, and Time Under Passive Tension.

The Role of Props in Stretching

Props are indispensable not only for beginners but for stretchers at all levels. They provide the necessary support to explore stretches more safely and effectively, ensuring proper alignment and helping to prevent injuries.

Pro Tip #1 Choose the Right Prop: Selecting the right prop is essential. While yoga blocks, straps, and bolsters are common, don’t overlook everyday household items. A thick book, a sturdy chair, a towel, or even a pillow can serve as effective props to help bridge gaps or support your body.

How Props Enhance Flexibility

  1. Support and Stability: Props help maintain alignment and allow muscles to relax deeper into stretches, crucial for safely improving flexibility.
  2. Increased Accessibility: Props make challenging poses more accessible. They allow you to modify poses to meet your body where it is, helping you achieve correct form and encouraging gradual progression.
  3. Prevention of Injury: Using props correctly helps avoid the overstretching and muscle strain that often lead to injuries.
Pro Tip #2 Listen to Your Body: Adjust your use of props if a stretch feels too intense. Remember, stretching should push your flexibility but never cause pain. Thoughtful use of props helps respect and protect your body’s limits.

Using Props to Modify Common Stretches

  • Hamstring Stretch with a Towel: While lying on your back, loop a towel around the sole of one foot and gently pull the leg towards you, keeping both hips on the ground. This helps maintain a neutral spine and prevents overstretching.
  • Supported Pigeon Pose with a Pillow: Place a pillow under your hip in the pigeon pose to keep your hips level and reduce strain, making the stretch more comfortable and effective.
Pro Tip #3 Be Creative: Don’t hesitate to experiment with different props and configurations. The best adaptations are often found through trial and error. Explore various options to discover how you can enhance your stretches most effectively using items readily available in your home.

Wrapping Up

Incorporating props into your stretching routine doesn’t signify a limitation; it’s a smart strategy for expanding your flexibility potential. Each time I use a prop, I am reminded of their importance in deepening stretches safely.

Remember, incorporating props isn’t a compromise—it’s a commitment to achieving deeper, safer, and more effective stretches. Let’s make the most out of every stretch, using what we have around us to support our journey toward greater flexibility.
