Discovering Your Enneagram Type: The First Step to Self-Understanding

  • By Brett Schaffner
  • In Enneagram

Have you ever felt intrigued by the idea of discovering the very core of your personality? Understanding your Enneagram type can be like getting a backstage pass to the workings of your mind and emotions. It’s the first crucial step in a journey of self-discovery that reveals not only your strengths and weaknesses but also your deepest motivations.

Why Introspection Matters?

Finding your Enneagram type is a journey of introspection. It’s about digging deep into what drives your fears, desires, and behaviors. While online quizzes and assessments can provide a starting point, they can only skim the surface (even mine). They might guide you towards a type you like or think suits you, but true self-discovery requires more. Think of it as dating—explore a type, spend time understanding its nuances, and see if it truly resonates with your inner self. If not, don’t hesitate to reconsider and explore other types—you’re looking for “The One”. Remember, only through genuine self-reflection can you begin to uncover your true Enneagram type.

Pro Tip #1 Pay close attention to how you react during stress and what brings you genuine joy. These reactions are helpful clues to your core Enneagram type.

A Brief Guide to the Nine Types

For a more detailed exploration of each type, I encourage you to read through my more comprehensive overview of the nine Enneagram types. For now, here’s a brief summary to get you started:

  • Type 1, The Moral Perfectionist: Focused on integrity and correctness.
  • Type 2, The Supportive Advisor: Warm and inclined to help others.
  • Type 3, The Successful Achiever: Efficiency and success-driven.
  • Type 4, The Romantic Individualist: Deeply creative and expressive.
  • Type 5, The Investigative Thinker: Intense curiosity and perceptiveness.
  • Type 6, The Loyal Guardian: Security-oriented and cautious.
  • Type 7, The Entertaining Optimist: Enthusiastic and experience-seeking.
  • Type 8, The Protective Challenger: Strong, confident, and protective.
  • Type 9, The Peaceful Mediator: Seeking harmony and stability.
Finding Your Enneagram Type Begin by trying to identify your Enneagram type after analyzing your core motivations. What type(s) do you resonate with? Then, try out this Enneagram typing quiz. Use it as a preliminary tool to point you in the right direction. After taking the quiz, don’t rush to conclusions. Instead, use the results as a starting point for even deeper exploration.

Confirming Your Enneagram Type

Confirming your Enneagram type is a personal process that involves a deep understanding of your inner workings. Only you can truly know your type because it depends on how well you understand your motivations and emotional responses. It’s a process, not a one-time event. Don’t get discouraged if clarity doesn’t come immediately; continue to explore and observe yourself in different situations.

Pro Tip #2 Keep a daily journal of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Over time, patterns will emerge that align with specific Enneagram types, helping clarify your type.

The Journey to Self-Understanding

Identifying your Enneagram type is not just about putting a label on your personality. It’s about beginning a deeper exploration of who you are and how you navigate the world. This understanding can lead to profound personal growth and improved relationships. The path to self-understanding is ongoing and requires patience and openness to change—and if you’ve read this far, I already know you have what it takes.
