Mark: The Gospel of Invitation
It’s a new semester here in Ecuador, so we have been hard at work developing resources so that students, new and old, can get to know and experience the person and love of Jesus in new and profound ways. With that, as a movement, we have decided to study the Gospel of Mark. Within InterVarsity, the IFES movement I come from, we have a Mark Camp each year where we inductively study half of the Gospel of Mark for a total of 40 hours… this means that to finish the study, it takes 2 years of attending the conference, 2 full weeks in the study, and about 80 hours inductively studying the Word! This semester we decided to run with a few themes from Mark Camp, one of which being a phrase I heard years ago that has always stuck with me that Mark is the “Gospel of Invitation.”
This semester we have created an 8-week study broken into two 4-week segments answering the questions, “Who is Jesus?” in the first segment and the question, “What does it mean to follow Him?” in the second. While studying the “Gospel of Invitation,” each week will end in an invitation (application) of its own for our students. I want to include the study breakdown with individual invitations so that if you want to study along with us this semester, you can! We will be studying using the Inductive Method which is based heavily in personal exploration of the text and observations. The basic idea is if we observe the text well, we can interpret it correctly so that we can effectively and accurately apply it to our lives and contexts. For more information on the Inductive Method, check out this description here.
If you decide to study along with us, please let me know you are doing so! I’d love to hear from you and know what God is inviting you to in this season! You can get in contact with me via email at brett.schaffner@intervarsity.org.
